Our easy to follow guide on how to look after your metal garden furniture!
After a few summers on a patio, some brands of metal garden furniture will inevitably start to show a few signs of weathering, like stubborn marks, rust and mildew stains. Luckily, all of our metal garden furniture pieces are made from aluminium, so we can guarantee it will not rust.
If you’re looking to perk up your existing metal furniture, we have put together some care advice for your outdoor furniture.
Metal Garden Furniture Care Advice
Metal furniture needs proper maintenance and care. Most furniture tends to have a protective finish, so a simple soapy washing-up liquid solution and cloth can clean up any marks and scuffs.
The protective finish on metal garden furniture tends to wear away within a few years, but things like acidic bird droppings can eat through weak spots in the finish at any point. Make a point of using a clean wipe to get rid of the marks whenever you spot them. Any coating that has worn away can be painted over again using a clear metal varnish, which will help add some protection to the vulnerable areas.
At the start and end of summer, make sure to check the condition of the varnish carefully. If you notice any areas that have bubbled in appearance or you can see rust damage, use sandpaper to carefully sand the area down before re-applying paint or varnish. Through the season, make a habit of wiping down the furniture with a cloth and soapy solution and dry very thoroughly.
Invest In Garden Furniture Covers
One of the main reasons people choose cast aluminium garden furniture is because it doesn’t rust. However, regardless of what furniture you have, it needs to be stored somewhere dry in order to keep it clean and ready to use again. If you don’t have a garage or shed to store the furniture in, we suggest investing in garden furniture covers as they will provide protection for the furniture and will help it to keep clean and useable.
Keep the Cushions Clean
Garden furniture is mostly seen as being uncomfortable and hard, but our metal garden furniture comes with cushions to create a comfortable and relaxing experience. Outdoor cushions tend to undergo a chemical treatment when they are manufactured to increase their resistance to stains and moisture, but they still need a little TLC from time to time. A basic clean will do the trick if the covers can be removed: simply take them off and pop them in the wash on a cool cycle with a mild detergent.
Avoid washing the foam inserts, as you will run the risk of causing mildew and encouraging mould growth. If you do have to wash them, just make sure they are completely dry before putting them back into the cushion cases.
If you’re packing away the cushions with the furniture, make sure they are stored in an air tight container, this helps to prevent spiders and bugs for destroying the cushions. If you wrap cushions in plastic or store them in bags, the trapped air can cause mould and mildew to grow rapidly – nasty!
If you look after your garden furniture it can last for many years to come, which means that our metal garden furniture sets may be the only pieces you will ever need to buy.
